Positions

We are actively looking for self-motivated students to join the Visual and Intelligent Data Analytics (VIDA) Lab at SMU to conduct cutting-edge research on information visualization, visual analytics, human-AI collaboration and HCI. We have multiple opennings, including PhD/master, research assistants, visiting research students and undergraduate research positions.


For Perspective PhD and Mphil Students

We are looking for PhD and Mphil students in Computer Science or Information Systems. During the postgraduate study, you will be involved in cutting-edge research in the general areas of data visualization and human computer interaction. Good candidates are expected to satisfy the following requirements:

  • A bachelor/master degree in Computer Science (or related fields) with good programming skills;
  • Being passionated about doing excellent research. Research experience in data visualization, data mining, machine learning and HCI will be a plus.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both writing and speaking.

Scholarship and Funding Support

The PhD students will be provided with a full postgraduate Scholarship for 4 years. Monthly stipend in addition to various fee waivers:
  • For Singaporean students: SG$2700 – SG$5000
  • For Singapore PR students: SG$2200 – SG$4000
  • For foreign students: SG$2000 – SG$3750
Outstanding candidates are encouraged to apply for SMU Presidential Doctoral Fellowships. I am also looking for PhD students under the program of SMU-China Scholarship Council (CSC) Joint Scholarship Scheme and Vingroup Young Talent Scholarship.

For Research Assistants (RA) and Visiting Research Students (VRS)

We have two immediate positions of RA or VRS to work on our MOE Tier 1 project that focuses on AI-powered data visualization design and user interaction. The major research goal is to explore how AI techniques can be applied to improve visualization design and its interactions. A SG$2500 monthly stippend and other related benefits (e.g., medical insurance and hotel cost for 14-days quarantine) will be provided. The position will be 6~12 months. Below are the basic requirements:
  • An ongoing PhD/master/bachelor student with a research background in data visualization or machine learning;
  • Excellent programming skills in Javascript and Python and being familiar with visualization toolkits like D3;
  • Excellent English communication skills, both writing and speaking.

For Undergraduate Students

I am always happy to mentor SMU undergraduate students to work on research projects on data visualization and HCI. The detailed topics can be based on mutual discussion between us, ranging from FinTech, social media, healthcare, Industry 4.0 and explainable AI.
